The first written mention of Kamianets-Podilskyi refers to the period between 1060-1062 years, so we can safely point out that the city has a rich past. Kamianets-Podilskyi was a major trading city in the 12-13 centuries, as well as an important historical site on the Silk Road.
As one legend says, its name Kamianets-Podilskyi took after the building on the stone island (the part “kamianets”, because “kamin” means the stone), surrounded by the canyon of the river Smotrich. According to the story, the Lithuanian princes Koriatovichy were hunting the deer. All of a sudden they saw an amazing site location in the valley, the one of interesting for the history of the city – the street named after the Princes Koriatovichy – leads to the Old city.
Kamianets-Podilskyi was always attractive for invaders, that’s why the owners of this city at different times were the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and the Ottoman Empire, the Commonwealth of Poland and even the Russian Empire. During distribution of the city between the Ottomans and the Poles, something interesting happened. Turks, passing the city to the Catholic Poles, agreed that the minaret in Kamianets-Podilskyi shall not be destroyed. The building remained, but on top of it there was placed a statue of the Virgin Mary. In the fullness of time Kamianets-Podilskyi became the capital of the Ukrainian People's Republic, though this lasted only 8 months. According to the decision of Simon Petliura in 1918 the city received special importance with own money - so-called "petlyurovka." Ivan Ogienko was appointed the head of government. Later he became the founder and first rector of Kamianets-Podilskyi Ukrainian university.
